Edge of the Earth

As my mother recently noted, “It’s a special feeling to be at the ocean, and being at the ‘edge’ of the earth.” Some of the best times to get that feeling are when there aren’t many people around, which was the case when I shot each of these 4 photos (all shot on different days). While Hermosa Beach gets a lot of people on sunny days (read: most days), my favorite time to hit the the beach is when the people have dispersed, and there’s a feeling of peace. All of these photos still bring me that peace when I look at them.

Where I Live (At least for now!)

One of the challenges of moving to a new place is to figure out all of the terminology of the different parts of the area. Let me see if I can get this straight…right at the moment, I live in Hermosa Beach, California, which along with Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach make up the “Beach Cities”, which are a small section of the South Bay area, which is a region of Greater Los Angeles. The city of Los Angeles is just part of the county of Los Angeles, and even places in Orange County are considered Greater Los Angeles? Whew, yeah, I think I got it.

Right when I arrived in the area I got a shot of Redondo Beach you can see by clicking here, then I got some photos and a video of Manhattan Beach that you can see by clicking here.   I was happy with these photos, but I still felt 2 things were missing.  1 was obvious in that I didn’t have a photo of the actual town I live in.  The 2nd was, I didn’t feel like I had really captured the real essence of the area.  On any halfway decent day, if you walk or ride a bike (or rollerblade!) down “The Strand” which goes along the beach in Hermosa, you will see all sorts of people playing volleyball, from casual amateurs, to professional teams practicing.  They actually play professional tournaments there.  It’s an integral part of the culture.   The night I shot this photo, the sunset was particularly beautiful, and there was a certain calm over the beach that was really a pleasure to take in.   The beach was empty by this point, and there were people quietly mulling around, just enjoying a nice evening in a peaceful area.   The laid back Southern California attitude seems to be real, and so far, I’m enjoying it.
