Harvard Square Characters

Harvard Square is a small area of Cambridge, Massachusetts where Harvard University is.

I worked in Harvard Square for the better part of 10 years, and I found it to be one of the most fascinating places I’ve ever spent time in. Just a few of the ways that people utilized the streets include:

-Students walked to class at Harvard University
-Professionals walked to work at various places
-Musicians, magicians, mimes, etc performed on the street
-People sold Spare Change Newspaper
-Homeless people wandered the streets, and often slept on them
-People promoted their religions or other various causes
-Photographers and tourists took it all in!
-And much more

I had the opportunity to speak with some of the people in these photos, and some of them do have websites, listed below.  Check the captions to see which websites go with which people.

This is Blue.  I met Blue the other day in Harvard Square and had a good conversation.  He’s been playing his show in the Square for about 18 years.  You can see his website at www.unclescam.org.

Mark Comes Home

This is Mark. I met him on the Weeks Footbridge in Cambridge MA. This is the area he grew up in, but he does not live there anymore, and it was a bittersweet time in his life. He wanted me to take some photos of him near his home. The building behind him is across the street from where he grew up.

For me, this photo really says something about no longer living where you call home. It’s behind you in a way, but it is still always right there.

Strike! ( X )

While landscape and cityscape photography is my favorite style, I do also quite enjoy candid shots and other shots of people.  I thought trying to get a shot of some sweet pin action at the bowling alley would be nice.  This was probably the best timed shot to begin with, and the fact that Paul cooperated by getting a strike was awesome.

I will admit that the silhouette effect here was more of a matter of necessity than a creative choice, but it worked out well.  That’s what happens at a dimly lit bowling alley with no tripod, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.  I’ve said it before, and I will say it again…I love Lanes and Games.
