New York City!

As usual, I have mixed feelings on New York City. I’ve had some fun there, I like the architecture, but it can easily stress me out. Especially if I’m there for work and have to drive! But I got there, did the work I had to do, stayed calm, and left a couple of days later. Below are some photos I shot in my down time.

NOTE: The work I was there for was commercial photography on assignment, shooting photos of construction sites, including people working. I really enjoyed it. If you are interested in learning more about options for me to photograph your commercial project, please call me at 857-472-3071 or email john@NoRoadUnturned.com

Feeling welcome, back in New York

I have returned to New York, at least for a few months, and particularly the mid-Hudson Valley. I’m excited for the opportunities ahead of me, and I appreciate the warm messages welcoming me back that so many people sent. I’ve been all over the place, mentally and physically the past few years, and it feels good to have so many people excited for my time here. I’m ready to really take things to the next level.

Mostly Work, A Little Play

I did not intend to spend as much time in Manhattan this year as I have, but, when an old friend of mine called and asked me to do some photo work to promote the new Icon apartment building I decided that it was an opportunity that I should not turn down. My penchant for abandoned buildings is well documented, but this was just the opposite. I got to explore an apartment building that was completely empty, as no one has lived in it yet. It was fascinating in its own way.

Over a couple of visits we covered photos of many of the views, shot some time lapses, and got the job done. The photos I took for the real estate company belong to them, but every so often I took a breather to shoot some of my own shots for fun, and I would like to share a few of them here.

Also, the Daily News wrote an article about the building, and used one of my photos on the website, and two in print. Check out the article online by clicking here!

New views of Manhattan

My thoughts about New York City are not a secret. You can see a bit of them by clicking here. I will openly admit that last year I left Manhattan and I stated that I wouldn’t care if I ever went there again. It had stressed me out, and I was living at the beach in California at the time, so I was not too used to being stressed out. A few opportunities came up recently that allowed me to view Manhattan in a different way, literally. First of all my new pilot friend Bruce called me one morning and asked if I was available to take over Manhattan and back, and obviously, I was all over that! Seeing the city from the above and seeing the amazing layout from that view was really interesting, and I started really becoming infatuated with the “1 World Trade Center” building, which recently became the tallest building in New York. I also was fascinated by seeing all the water surrounding the city from that perspective.

A few days later, coincidentally, I had made plans to visit my friends Mike and Jess who live in New Jersey, and they asked if I wanted to come with them to see the 9/11 Memorial, so I did that, and was able to get some up close views of 1 World Trade Center. I love that you can literally watch an iconic building of the world be built. It is no stretch to say that this would be like having been able to watch the Roman Coliseum being built. It’s a big deal. Then we went to Battery Park City, which I had never really checked out before, and I was amazed at how peaceful that was. Parks and greenways and families hanging out by the water – seems good enough to me!

I went back into the city the next day to work a conference for a few days and was also able to quickly pop off a shot of Grand Central Station. It was nice to be witnessing the hustle, but not feeling part of it.

So, for now, I like Manhattan. Hopefully I will feel the same next time!

My friend Mike and his baby daughter relaxing with me in the city

Road to Freedom

This is a shot I took while walking around Brooklyn with my family – it is South 10th Street, and you can see One World Trade Center, formerly known as the Freedom Tower, being built across the river in Manhattan.

Road to Freedom

New York…..New York

What do you think of when you hear New York? If you’re not from the state of New York or any state bordering it, you almost definitely think of the big city lifestyle as glamorized by anyone from Frank Sinatra to Jay-Z and Alicia Keyes. The city that never sleeps….concrete jungle where dreams are made of….you know the deal. And you wouldn’t be alone. Even people who live in or near New York often only think about the city.

As someone who grew up a few hours north of the city, when I hear New York I think first about the mountains and natural beauty of the Catskills and Mid-Hudson Valley, and I immediately want to be there, as it’s where I still feel most at home.

Recently I had the fortune of being able to experience both views of New York. Early in the week I worked a business conference in Manhattan, and later in the week I did some more photography on assignment around the city. It was all hustle, all bustle. Then for the weekend, myself and a good friend of mine were able to escape up to the Catskills. We met up with some other friends of mine and did some hiking at the Mohonk Preserve, and I made some good photos of Bonticou Crag, which was on my photo to-do list. It was a great week that really has me feeling good about where I’m at in life.

I have posted some photos below that represent both views of New York.

George Washington Bridge

I recently found this photo in my collection, while sorting and organizing old photos. It’s not the most original composition by any means, but I’m happy with how it came out, especially considering how overcast it was. If you look closely, you’ll see that it is a color photo! I bet you thought it was black and white.
