Harvard Square Characters

Harvard Square is a small area of Cambridge, Massachusetts where Harvard University is.

I worked in Harvard Square for the better part of 10 years, and I found it to be one of the most fascinating places I’ve ever spent time in. Just a few of the ways that people utilized the streets include:

-Students walked to class at Harvard University
-Professionals walked to work at various places
-Musicians, magicians, mimes, etc performed on the street
-People sold Spare Change Newspaper
-Homeless people wandered the streets, and often slept on them
-People promoted their religions or other various causes
-Photographers and tourists took it all in!
-And much more

I had the opportunity to speak with some of the people in these photos, and some of them do have websites, listed below.  Check the captions to see which websites go with which people.

Cambridge Sunset

This is the shot I came to the bridge to get before I met Mark. The lighting was really hard so I went for a silhouette, and I’m really happy with how it turned out.

Cambridge Sunset

I noticed a parking garage near my apartment I had never even thought about before, and walked up it right as the sun was setting. The top of a parking garage often has one of the clearest publicly accessible views around, and this was no exception. This was taken near Inman Square and I was looking Southwest. (I think)

Snowy Branches

I was driving home from work tonight and liked the way the branches were covered with snow on the streets of Cambridge, so I stopped and took some photos. I am really working on sometimes focusing on small details so I decided to take a photo of some of the branches, instead of an entire tree. Works good as a computer desktop background!

Mt Auburn Cemetery in Winter

First of all, I finally convinced myself that it’s spelled “cemetery”.  Am I the only one who thought it was spelled “cemetary”?  Well, I digress.

The Mt Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA was America’s first landscaped cemetery.  It’s fascinating and creepy at the same time.

I am still in the relatively early stages of learning HDR photography, so this was a bit of a challenge.  For those of you (most of you) who don’t know, it’s a technique that blends multiple exposures together to really bring out the finer details in a photo.  I did it pretty well here, but there’s a lot about this that can be improved.  I still like it though.  The best part of this is that it was nice to get out shooting early before work.

Charlie’s Kitchen – Harvard Square

I love Charlie’s.  Double bacon blue with waffle fries, please.

Charlie’s one of the reasons that even though I don’t live in Cambridge, and never have, I always defend Cambridge when people assume it’s totally snooty and pretentious.

This photo took a lot more effort that it might appear.  This was at least the 3rd time I tried to get this, and I had trouble with the umbrella, people walking in and out, and all sorts of other issues.  But it was worth it.
